A cracked MacBook screen is one of the most stressful things that can happen to your computer, especially when you rely on it for work. The good news is that MacBook screens are replaceable, and you do not need to buy a new laptop. Here is what the process looks like from start to finish.
Types of MacBook Screen Damage
Not all screen damage is the same, and the type of damage affects the repair approach:
- Cracked glass with working display: You can still see everything on screen, but there are visible cracks. The LCD panel underneath may still be intact.
- Cracked glass with display damage: You see lines, discoloration, black spots, or portions of the screen are blank. Both the glass and LCD need replacement.
- Flickering or dim display: The screen flickers, has a pink tint, or is very dim. This can be a backlight issue, a display cable issue, or an LCD failure.
- No display at all: The laptop turns on (you hear the chime or feel the keyboard), but the screen stays black. Could be display, cable, or logic board related.
How MacBook Screen Replacement Works
MacBook screens are integrated assemblies. Unlike most Windows laptops where you can replace just the LCD panel, MacBook screens (especially Retina models) consist of the glass, LCD, and backlight bonded together. The entire display assembly gets replaced as one unit.
The process involves carefully removing the broken display from the aluminum hinges, disconnecting the display cable from the logic board, and installing the new assembly. On MacBook Air and newer MacBook Pro models, the display also houses the webcam and ambient light sensor, so those come with the replacement assembly.
How Long Does It Take?
If we have the replacement screen in stock, a MacBook screen replacement typically takes 1 to 2 hours. Some models with complex cable routing may take a bit longer. We test the new display thoroughly before returning your laptop to make sure everything works: brightness, color accuracy, webcam, and ambient light sensor.
Will I Lose My Data?
No. A screen replacement does not affect your hard drive or SSD. Your files, applications, and settings remain exactly as they are. We do not need to erase or reset anything during a screen repair.
Which MacBook Models Can You Repair?
We replace screens on all MacBook models, including:
- MacBook Air (2015 through current M3 models)
- MacBook Pro 13-inch (2015 through current)
- MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch (M1 Pro/Max through current)
- MacBook 12-inch (2015 through 2017)
Why Not DIY?
MacBook screen replacements are not beginner-friendly repairs. The display cables are fragile, the screws are tiny and vary in length (using the wrong screw in the wrong hole can damage the logic board), and the display assembly needs to be aligned precisely in the hinges. A professional repair ensures it is done right the first time.
